the ushering in of the new year has gradually been rather dull in the recent few years, the Y generation getting more mature and taller, the older generation getting older, what else is there which stays the same like it was 10 years back? most of us have forgot the meaning of this traditional chinese occasion. anybody still remember the demon nian, who terrorises the village people? thats, from what i know, how cny actually came about.
and what about the meaning of the angbaos given to the young and unmarried? the true meaning of the red paper instead of the money inside? the act of giving mandarin oranges, and the older generation giving back to them, whatever that means, i do not know exactly. and there was the old times when you always tag along your parents to the malls for some last minute shopping after reunion dinner, or to the florist to get some fresh new plants for the house. nowadays, we just chill over some beer and tv while getting some early rest.
the modern way of celebrating the new year has incorporated with some family values, peppered in with some sort of money involved. the whole family getting together for some gambling session, be it mahjong, daidee, or blackjack, as long as it serves its purpose, who cares how you play it. i think its the best way to get everyone together, yet kill time when everyone has nothing to do besides watching tv and talking. its always intriguing to see the young ones getting exciting over a few bucks they earn, and some grim faces when they start to lose their pocket money. so cute to see their faces at the most real moments.
the vicious cycle, of people parting and new members joining in .its always heart-warming to see new additions in the family starting to crawl, den walk the following year, and after that, start to talk to you coherently. den you will start to think of making your own. gosh, im fast forwarding 10 years.
anyway, it always tiring to go visiting house to house, jurong to tampines, woodlands to bishan. why cant everyone stay in one block, and we can just walk around the block without having caught in a jam on the highways. the distance is usually so far, the journey so tiring, and your parents start to nag about your life, you start talking back, they start complaining. =/ i hate chinese new year.
this is the first year im spending CNY holding a green ID card, most likely due to that reason, i dont really feel the new year mood. who cares about the meaning of the festive season, what the old people think about washing away bad luck and bringing in new ones. somehow its true, we grow to love our past.
this is also the first year we would be spending reunion dinner without grandma. the house seemed so quiet these few months coming home from camp. i miss her company, chit-chatting, and her talking about the past about my parents, my aunts and uncles etc. no more old stories forever. her presence still lingers around i think, watching over us like our guardian angels. because of her departure, we cant really usher the new year with a bang. which probably means i've got lots of time to kill during these few days.
enough said about the ushering in of the new year, lets digress abit to my day job. life as a medic has been much more meaningful now, maybe because i've seen how great and highly responsible this profession is. saving lives, wow, i never thought i would be doing these things all my life. we've been more motivated to make our time there much interesting, enjoying making new friends, laughing it out and learning from the little mistakes we make. we must be happy with whatever job we do, says one of our senior instructors. who wants to be a doctor, or a fire fighter? its so much risk doing, but do it with passion, do it with a smile =]. take home a skill, probably something useful to you, and you will realise it might come handy one day.
have a kicking bitchy year in 2006.
the main arena was playing house, not really what i love grooving to. but the place was so fully packed we just moved along to the "noisy" music. SMOOVE was the kind of muzik for mefrom the start, we made a mistake walking out of that room, not knowing where the loos were, in the end spent some effort getting in once again.
party all you can, play hard while you can, because you still have a long road to walk after that. my legs are shagged, my body is heavy. but im so glad to have seen MOS' biggest club here in singapore.
the usual bunk jokes, smacking mates around in the platoon, shouting, screaming, watching people from other units, experiencing different cultures with the other people from other countries, its definitely interesting to see all these while you're serving the nation. oh and never forgetting studying in our bunks for the tests coming up, practising the different bandages on our buddies, laughing a great deal when we make mistakes. its both mentally and physically straining sometimes.
our friday bookouts are probably the ones we always looked forward to. its the only thing that motivates you to push on after 5 days doing what nobody wants to be doing. this week, i had another outing with the usual mates in the platoon, catching the show 'cheaper by the dozen 2'. i haven watched the first installment, but this one definitely tickled by laughing bones a whole lot. we had so much laughing i guessed the whole cinema must have cursed and swore at us. btw, e-cinema at e-max rocks. thou its kinda small.
memoirs of a geisha next. and pink panther too.
friday, the 13th
went out for dinner with some of my platoon mates at northpoint. we wanted to watch derailed but there werent any slots left. in the end settled on pool at cck becuz there wasnt a nice show. farking far lah. it wasnt too bad. k-pool always plays songs from k-box. reminiscense of the old days i used to play pool with some of the mates after school.
saturday, 14th
the weekend mood never felt so right. did some window shopping, like the usual times, broke as usual. this year i wont be spending a very pleasant lunar new year cuz of gram's departure. therefore, new clothes can wait. caught the movie, dreamer, with poly mates tw, cm, jy and py. it wasnt quite a bad movie. but imagine buying the movie ticket 10 mins before its screening and being able to get good seats, it really freaks me out in the beginning. the theatre wasnt even half full. a story about a girl living the dreams of a manager of an injured horse, bringing her back to the race course and eventually winning. a typical movie which touches the hearts of everyone. the ones you'd watch and sigh afterwards.
had dinner at the foodcourt at plaza sing. the only stall we'd always eat whenever we're there. =p. reminds me of the old poly days, again. more window shopping looking around plaza sing and stretches of orchard, but most of the shops' shutters were already drawn. we left the scene as soon as we felt our bodies heavy once again. the body clock of an army boy shuts down immediately after 11.

just another session of bonding time lah, some might say. i talked to a bunch of platoon mates, strangers at first, friends in the end. the jokes we shared, the facts in life we agreed on, and the things about girls. time flies when you have fun. the rain slowly simmered, our CC decided to carry on with the program as stipulated, 2 hours behind schedule. we managed to earn ourselves an early bookout timing due to our performance.
had a great time exploring chinatown with tw. stretches of club street and muhd ali lane. walking the alien land where we've never been. the whole stretch was so high-end and posh we found ourselves at the wrong place wearing absolutely the wrong stuffs. the whole place seemed like surreal land to me. every piece worth at least a month's of my pay, or at least half of it. and the uncle type of bars and pubs lining up one by one along tanjong pagar, together with the bridal shops too. anyway, the day ended kinda early, probably because we were all tired.
some of us had our cpr course completed in a single day. amazing how cpr can save lives, yet a rather simple skill to pick up. maybe thats how being a medic benefits from the SAF. we get free lessons, yet learn a new skill every single day! thats looking on the bright side of course, i guess there are many more sad facts about other vocations as well.. thats life. =/
the weekend crowd of 2006 brings in new life. i do not know the apparant reason, but there were so much more to see this time round. and im sure chinatown brings in its fairshare of admirers too over there, the opening ceremony marks the nearing of the lunar new year. the festive season lining themselves up in january definitely escalates the moods of everyone.
we watched a movie over in town. the highly rated "the family stone". very family-oriented, comedy, love all packed into the 100-min show. its supposed to be a xmas movie, but who cares, you can spread the love anytime of the year, plus, the festive mood is still lingering around as christmas is only 2 weeks gone. how could a mcadams fan miss a rachel mcadams show? go catch it will ya?
met up with the usual dudes, rard, jewel and tw. window shopping for me, the rest got clothes while im too broke even to get a decent tee. walked ard far east, new leftfoot stall opened. didnt realised that, that really shows how long i haven been to town yah.. we went looking around for cafes to chill. most of the places were either closing or packed.
we finally settled at mistro bistro@cine. had a few usual crappy jokes on the staff there. the classic one would have to be the bulldozer. LOL. reminds me of the old days we used to have. crapping and laming just laughing all our sorrows away. ice-cream was great! maybe too much ice-cream all at once, didnt feel too good after that. took the last train home with the dudes, saw hock and his friend, caught up abit. though the night was short, but it was definitely worth every minute of time.
we met up at harbourfront. most of the dudes haven yet arrived. we had dinner at pastamania, the lowest budget meal to be found, spent more time-wasting walking ard harbourfront shopping centre. we crossed over the road to check out sky symphony 06 party. throngs of people were already queueing up for the foam party over at siloso. kinda regretted not getting the tickets from tw. =/
we spend some time finding our way up mt faber, considering the fact that we didnt want to squeeze the bus service because it was so packed already. it was a short 20 minute stroll up the 100m peak. the air was fresh, the place was quiet and serene. there werent much crowd when we reached at about 2300. and so we spent more time talking about almost everything. not to mention we got ourselves a drink, $4 a bottle of voda voda mineral water. wtf LOL we got robbed just before 2005 ended.
anyways, the fireworks began crackling and shooting up the skies of telok blangah and marina respectively. we lost track of time talking, because there wasnt any music, or any other sort of official countdown or wadsoever. we had a hard time moving here and there to get a glimpse of the spectacular. too bad for you guys because my camera fone sucks. i couldnt get a good photo at all. =/
we got down the mountain. got lost in the process. saw a bunch of about 20 transexuals, dressed as doctors, nurses and patients. they were screaming as us. i was afraid that we got mobbed by them because they were all looking so gayish. royden managed to get us out of that place to the nearby bus-stop where we could take a ride down town.
speaking of town, this year there are so many bangladeshees! what are they doing there stuck with us, doing their crazy moves, spraying party sprays at young chinese girls, and making a nuisance out of themselves. they come in groups, mostly smelling of liquor. im glad the police were there to control the crazy men, who started dancing in the middle of nowhere, attracting a crowd cheering for them.
getthefunkout party at ngee ann city was the initial plan for me. luckily i managed to see how it was like. the tickets were selling at a $10 in the final few hours. woohoo.. r&b party! wads more exciting to usher in the new year? i'm really looking forward to the next one.
