i have been an avid reader of magazines ever since i got enlisted. health mags, lifestyle mags, fashion magazines, you name it, i think i've seen at least one issue of it. the similiarity i find amongst them is that girls were usually employed for male mags, and vice versa. sex sells. thats a unanimous fact.
the use of pretty booby babes on covers to sell certainly brings upon more income rather than a simple slogan with only the product itself. what attracts them to the product is not the thing they would buy, but the girls. adam's weakest point. ah, god's creation. the same thing men spend most of their time searching for their entire lives. add to the fact the mysterious origins of human beings, how we were all made. it makes the opposite gender - women, so much more interesting.
take tv for example. imagine a gorgeous host on the show, compared to a normal one. im sure you know which one gets the better share of viewers. and how sarongpartygirl gets her share of readers to reading her blog initially, but now, at least i know, she has got the talent to writing as well. and compare her to mr brown or mr miyaki, i think she takes less effort getting the popularity. you get the picture.
men always has to try harder getting to heaven. that sucks.
as we slowly hit sispec, we know we were close to our end point. we had our hearty satay beehoon there, before the final 4-km back home. this time, non-stop mix of army hits peppered with pop songs in between, creating a unique "stylo" taurus three montage. as we parade around the cluster, we raised our m-16 on top of our helmets, as the other companies heads out to cheer for us. we felt like superstars. our PC gave us some debrief, and the usual motivational talk. our morale was back to sky high again.
thats how army goes. you get fucked and screwed, cry and bow to higher authority, swear at them behind their backs, and in the end, get all the bonding we should deserve. and when there's no one looking, start the back-stabbing all over again. thats how it goes for all the other platoons, i guess, the whole shit happens everywhere. the fakery in the acquaintances i make, two-faced bustards who come and go so quickly. maybe im still green about the outside world, people trying to get the most out of everything in you before dumping you away. we, the younger generation, have this problem; shooting our mouths off too quickly, piercing and hurting each other in the process. thats why its so more difficult to find a soutmate these days.
and in the army, where you live with 48 other different people from different backgrounds, different upbringing, different environment, this would cause their social being to be worlds apart from mine. and adding to the fact that they do not know how and where you came from exactly, it makes things more interesting. it usually takes time to know someone deep in the heart, but put through the test, under the stress and test of time, all you need to understand falls into place, and the entire picture you see is menacing. the ugliest site. the human nature. the answer is out. all you have to do is believe that is the friend you have been trusting for 11 weeks. yucks.
it occured to me that life was still a standstill even though ten weeks has passed on by as a botak soldier. the things around me have changed rather quickly, but im still the old me. maybe i need a change. but life will continue to be the same for me as the trend continues to remake itself through time. mostly because the culture in army will stay the same for ten, twenty years. but in the outside civilisation things metamorphose so quickly every few months you get lost when you lose touch with it. maybe thats how i feel, not being able to keep up with it.
however, all that talking about how quickly things change over time, i feel time is not something i have a strong grasp on. although we all have 24 hours allocated to us, we have different ways of controlling the hands of time. as a matter of fact, when you are an NSF, you only have about 24 hours to spend, minus the sleeping time, you barely have enough for yourself. and the same old shit goes on for 2 years. that leaves me with not much time to plan for the future. we all know hasty planning isnt the best way to work. work or study? get a life or not? these question marks keep on coming back. i cant seem to get a solution to it.
we walk many different paths in our life. at crossroads, we meet different people who would walk short distances with us before finally parting again. some good friends keep on walking with you, the others leave you to meet more new friends. should fate allow, you meet your old friends again at another junction. i guess thats how life goes..
i dont know what happened. i seem to be getting more hostility from my platoon mates, as well as my section mates as well.. haha. i mean these things get around pretty quickly when you exchange words rather blatantly. but things get patchy all over i guess. im never good at socialising and keeping a relationship anyway.. these acquaintances come and go just like that, faster than a blink of an eye.
we sing "friends ", or peng you, during the route marches, we look like one big platoon all bonded as one, but i see it broken up into many pieces. friends on the surface, holding parangs behind waiting to stab each other's back when the right time comes. the dark side of men. i think that applies to the females as well?
who cares really? its down to the last 2 weeks or so before we finally go our separate ways. things should stay the same unless somebody gives in. thats the time to see when the real friendship really stays.
listening to our little radio set, compliments from syai, our oot section mate, reading the TODAY newspaper and just talking big crap.
did u guys know TODAY came up with sudoku under the plus section, the american game where you link a row of 9 numbers. and a box of 3X3 box would also consist of the numbers 1-9. very intriguing. got most of us cracking our brains, trying to link up the digits together. syai went on to get the little book of sudoku, 200 puzzles to solve, split up into 5 different levels to ponder about. go try it people, first in the TODAY newspaper.
it seems like when you know somebody more, you tend to find his flaws rather than his strengths. because he tends to show his most beautiful side on the very first day, leaving nothing special left in him. and den the rest of the days, his most evil actions start to surface like oil starting to appear after an oil rig leaking.
bustards some might say, just normal friends others might consider, i just call them scums. they do not participate in any of your daily routines, but they just wan to poke their noses when it comes to the inspection bit. wayang lah, this is what i call being in the army. and when it starts to get on the nerves of the whole platoon, we just have to whack the shit out of him. for now, we just ostracise him, hoping he gets the hint that his attitude is just too fucked up to handle.
start saving up people.
a decent meal - $30
dessert - $10
getting a bunch of friends together - priceless
it was just like any other saturday outings, the ones we used to have on weekdays pushed to weekends due to our various committments, ie. national service and work. anyway, we started out at tiong bahru, caught "Just like Heaven". good plot, strong storyline, and the emotions ran high in the show. go catch it people. worth every single cent from your hard-earned dollar.
trained down town for a little stroll, and dinner at jack's place. i must say that i haven been to jack's place before. maybe during my childhood days.. i cant remember really. house steak is still the best thing on earth afterall. spent more time walking than shopping because most of the shops have already pulled down their shutters. retail therapy has to wait for yet another week. boo.
more walking after joel came to join us. the clubs stil attracting its fare share of crowd even after the midweek holiday break. girls seemed to pour down town more often nowadays huh. and the standards escalating so much. that was one of my thoughts again.. LOL. 4 more weeks to POP. hang in there..
anyhow, get over popular mando pop, and army hits will start to ring in my head once again. its the military life all over, this time only for 2 days. i feel thankful for the clash of the calenders, putting deepavali and hari raya puasa one day apart from one another. must have been a good three or four days for most of us im sure. be it spending it at home rotting, or prowling the streets in town, dancing the night away, or just chilling out at the coffee house, as long as you enjoyed yourselves, i guess its good enough.
it somehow feels like sunday today, mainly because i will be booking in. and most of the times, booking in day is a gloomy day. no matter how great the previous day has been, the mood swings 180ยบ. uncle and aunt came over today, and started commenting how much i've changed over the past few weeks. its amazing, they say, how army has changed people. have i changed? i do not know either. well people, continue to enjoy the rest of the puasa evening while we start to move back into tekong for our training..
the day started out bright with a coveted trip to queensway. a few berms caught my eye, and those should be in my wardrobe in the next few weeks' time, probably after pay is rolled in. its amazing how japan and hong kong get their designers to be so creative and innovative to design such amazing pieces. LOVE it.
a short bus ride to town. yes, again for the second consecutive time. we never get tired of that place we call heaven, it used to be second home, and now i guess it shall be demoted to the third spot, given the fact that i spend my 6 nights every week sleeping in tiny island tekong. had ljs for dinner, a hearty meal considering all the memories brought back, the food we used to order, the jokes we had while eating ljs, something which will stay with me for quite some time..
a little walk around cine, basically the same old shops on level 2, just to kill time basically, so that we could be on time for our movie. i wanted to catch domino, but the timings werent very attractive, so we decided on the legend of zorro instead. i must say i didnt really like the show very much, thou the rest of them thought otherwise. maybe it was just alright, a typical good-men-always-win show, the happily-ever-after ending is just so cliche every hero movie adopts. maybe one good thing the scriptwriter made was sprinkling short jabs of lame jokes, turning them into little anti-climaxes just to ease the mood a little, bringing you back to the characters, rather than bore you with the plain storyline.
after the show, met up with joel. tw and gang were already at zouk partying the night away. cabbed down to phuture, but the queue was already miles apart from the entrance. spent a good 100 mins trying to get into it, but we felt our civilian lives were better spent on filling our tummies and having a little chill-out somewhere else, and in turn saving the cover charge.
had supper at swensen's at crown prince. we talked about life in national service, bmt, ocs how it changes one's life, and a whole lot others. must have been a good two hours or so eating our hearts out, filling our little tummies which went through seven long tormenting days in field camp. went to check out chinablack but there was still a handful of crowd trying to get in still.
no clubbing this week. means i'll have to wait for POP before i get another shot at wed night clubbing. maybe it was the movie which caused everything. the time of the show, causing the drag in time, caught in the thick of the queue. in any case, the perfect plan was ruined and im so not very happy with my holiday..
the usual routes we paraded on, the shops, certain parts of it have already been changed, most of it though, still untouched, leaving most of the memory intact. saw some of my platoon mates whilst reminiscencing on the past. cant believe they got such pretty girlfriends sia. its still quite shocking, thinking about it.
shopping is still as fun. picking what you like, getting your mates to give you their ideas and comments, laugh about stupid designs, in the end, buying something not everybody thinks is the best one. LOL. whats so interesting is that when you start to wear that stupid tee out, everyone starts to think its nicer the more you wear it. wierd yet true.
we had dinner at sushi tei after much walking. japanese cuisine still the best after all these times. after field camp, everything is nice. i feel so happy to be in singapore suddenly, because all the nicest food are here. and we singaporeans, born gluttons, thrive on good food and good life. the epicurean way is the best way to live life. better den the regimental one where you haf to stick by all the rules, play the game just like everyone else.
but i know this life has to end somehow.. soon i will find town a hassle to go. because soon enough, there wont be enough buddies to hit the streets with me, and i will soon be too old to be wearing what everyone else is wearing. i hate this BIG change that i have to go through.. this definitely sucks...
coincidentally, after the field camp, this year, deepavali and hari raya puasa falls falls on the same week. three full days of holiday rewarded for the seven days spent outfield. and im still planning what this world has got to offer; the vibes of life has yet to infiltrate my system. one day of street parading ard town, drinking and dancing my sorrows away after that in the newly renovated zouk on wed night should be more than enough for me to satisfy the void in me. interested parties? call or text.
has anybody realised its already november? october seems like a fast month flying past, and before you realise it, its gone. it means that 8 weeks separate us from the new year, 5 weeks more to POP. soon enough it'll be over, will it?
