the seven-day "adventure" began on monday morning with an 8-km route march to our first campsite - reclaimed land. the place was very "man-made"; trees grown nicely, one big patch of grass for training, and jungle for simulation purposes. we began building our first bashas once we've reached our campsite. it was tough in the beginning, but we learnt the small techniques from the sergeants who gave us valuable tips. our first lunch in the form of combat rations on a small grass patch under a big tree, feeding the hungry mosquitoes.
we began learning how to judge distances, and stuffs like that. had some practices and dinner followed. had the daily field routine at night where we had the first powder bath. it was freaking pitch dark where you can barely see each other. but we were all stripped stark naked and im sure many would remember. we were all tired, had an early night.
the second day was pretty much routinal. lessons in the morning in full battle order because we were doing some stupid small mistakes. lunch and some practice in the noon doing visual searching before marching to our next campsite. i dunno the name of the site, but it was some ulu ground with tall thick grass. built our bashas before night falls. had a chit-chat/bonding session with our new pc.
day three of field camp with all of us already half shagged. we learnt how to walk in file formation and practising how to draw on our range card in the morning moving down the road to practising fire movement drills and all sorts of crawls in the afternoon. had a good laugh with the sergeants because some cocksters screwed it up like the normal days.. thinking back about it makes us grin.. LOL
day four, our technical break. something everyone is looking forward to after doing through three days of shit. we were still fighting hard not to get punished for every single shit we do. trying hard to work as a section, a platoon, a company. a 4km march to the third campsite - oil palm, basha building followed by lunch. went to "bath", shave and basically wash up. bad experience there because the toilet simply SUCKS. and it was raining heavily whilst we were there. we got dirtier after bathing. =/
we came back, watch one platoon mate got fucked while we took shelter in our basha, waiting for the rain to simmer. when the rain finally ended, it was dinner already. sounds like when you're in field camp, time flies sia.. we got tekan every now and den, so we were rather glad to see the sun set once again.. supposed to haf OC evening that night, but the OC cancelled it because the place was too small, and the weather was stil wet. our pc, who just got his full lieutanent came back for the event. so we made use of the guitar we brought, while nicholas (one of the platoon mates in section 2) performed with his yoyo skills. simply fabulous. we sang so many songs around the big torch, famous camp songs, retro ones, rock hits, all of them. our morale was sky high after that night. life seemed better already..
day five started with another 4km march to our final campsite - rubber plantation. a place i would never forget. the trees so magnificiently tall and artifically planted; surreal jungle some would say. "never would you find a jungle so beautifully grown", our pc told us. we built our basha on the slope of a tiny hill. platoon sergeant appointed me as the platoon IC. wtf. we had lunch and practiced more on our fire control order. played with blanks, which was rather fun, but the kneeling and proning on the ground kills. we had a group battle course in the late afternoon which lasted till the evening. had dinner and had our usual powder bath. lights out was rather late because our pc was the CDO (company duty officer) of the day.
day six simply fucked up. had our first turnout at five plus in the morning. and the problem with being the IC means you gotta be down there reporting strength before everyone else does. fortunately, we're the first platoon! =] got back to our sleep, camou on after breakfast and it was another fire movement practice. fresh ration for lunch! simply delicious.
shellscrape digging after lunch. TIRING. physically and mentally torturing. i had to dig one extra mile because of my height. went on to help dig the fire trench. 5 hours of hard digging got us another round of fresh rations for dinner. we ate in the dark like the rest of the night, not knowing wad we were eating. platoon sergeant was the DI (duty instructor) of the day makes my job as a PIC even more arduous.
our last powder bath for the field camp. we were asked to light our 6 candles making a mini deepavali in the rubber plantation. very special indeed. we finished up our powder bottles with every single part of our shagged bodies white and nice-smelling. we slept in our shellscrapes which we dug in the day, very unique indeed. watching the stars twinkling above you, the crickets singing beside your "hole", your buddies ard you snoring..
day seven began. more FCO because we got too many blanks to expand. we were tunnel-led to sispec for our battle innoculation course (BIC), something all NSF hates i guess. leopard and baby crawling through a course of about 100m, before throwing grenade at your target and charging at it. we were all motivated to do it since it was already the end of the seven-day field camp. we were sent back to our company line by tunnel, by that time, we were already in high spirits singing our hearts out.
our lunch with our final pack of combat ration. sucks. the afternoon back in our coyline washing the mud off our sbo and stores, making ourselves humankind again. cleaning our weapons was the worst part of all. the whole thing was black, sandy and rusty. had our first lunch at the cookhouse. cookhouse food was the best thing. the aunties and uncles serving us food were more than happy to give us more. we spent the night happily eating our tidbits and crapping. we had an early night on comfy spring beds for the first time in 7 days.
we woke up feeling fresh and psyched like the rest of the booking out days. life was simply good and at a high level because only 2 sergeants were left behind to keep us busy for the day. i must say i really enjoyed myself during the past week, and im sure sit test which is due to come next week would be something we would be looking forward to somehow..
i spent the short weekend all alone at home, doing what im supposed to be doing, just like the old days.. this is where im supposed to be, stuck at home, in front of the computer surfing the net, chatting with old friends, rekindling old ties.
this is where i belong, i guess so. i want to live by my own rules, my own ways where freedom is the key. not running about, listening to instructions, carrying guns with the intention to kill. the world outside is just too troublesome to live in.
but its useless to rant about how surreal i want my world to be, because i have to get through 2 years of military responsibility. field camp, an integral part of bmt phase, starts on monday and ends on sunday. i wonder how life is gonna be in the jungle, getting all dirrty and fucked up. i cant imagine, really, thinking about it sucks so much already. but the 3 days off after field camp seems so beckoning and provacatively placed that we feel we will pull through the 7 days altogether.
eve of deepavali will be the next bookout, and till den, these 8 days will be one memorable experience and best chance to bond i hope..
"dont test the system" they say "follow the instructions and you will have a smooth ride..", does that make soldiers followers and not leaders? listening to commands, doing what you are supposed to do makes men stupid over time. because they do the same old thing every single day, nothing special to spice things up in there.
we were talking about how stupid we have became just in six weeks, shouting commands and marching left right left, no doing this, not being able to execute that. whats the point of knowing the rationale of it when you realise it serves no benefit for you?
anyhow, the week has been pretty packed, especially when we had a chance to fire our first live bullets over at the 100m range. for many of us, this was our maiden try at this, and i guess that was the only good thing that we manage to get in the army. more stringent rules were laid down, but still some misfits still managed to fire the shots without any instructions. obviously, they were fucked and given their due punishment.
i couldnt care less. get over and done with it like most of us do. im hating life in there more every single day. 7 days a week, 5.5 days wasted in the little island training and slogging our vigor away. but of course for a good cause, protecting the people and serving the nation like the rest of the men of the republic. the less time you have as a civilian makes you want to be a civilian more yah, i guess the same shit applies to many other things, and treasure the people you love even more.
does this entry make any fucking sense at all? who cares. i just want to get every shit off my chest...
spent the entire saturday sleeping my civilian life away. due to the previous long day. the weekend was raining all the way i must say. the weather's been rather chilly, maybe its because im so sick. met up with the old folks from my materal side; my maternal grandma's 80th birthday.
i have to say everyone there were shocked to see me. maybe its because they haven seen a botak for a few years since my cousins shaved (and they missed it when my bro was in bmt a few months ago). another reason might be that i have spend my first six years of my life staying with my maternal grandma and everyone practically grew up with me. i used to be this fair and scrawny boy, now tanned with a few muscles. most of them couldnt recognise me, likewise for me. life has been pretty much rocky for most of my uncles and aunties. its always good to see them, receive a few advice from the experts, share a meal, laugh ourselves out and just having each other's company.
one special moment this year was that everyone brought along their girlfriend and wives. great to see the family expanding so much over the few years that has just passed. soon, babies would pop out and we'll need more tables by den. =]
after dinner, the few cousins went clubbing at rouge. great to know the bouncers there where you just pop your face and they let you in, absolutely FOC! anyhow, i never liked the smoky places like this, but once in a while, i guess its still quite alright for me. played pool there with my cousins and a few of the challengers there. had a few glasses of beer while watching the chicks shake it out. we left the scene early.
i woke up and realised i was sick. from the overnight mahjong to the late night pubbing, and a whole lot of other reasons snowballed altogether. plus the day was drizzling plus cold winds. practically shivering all the way. wonder how to book in later. life of an army boy sucks i must say, though i kind of enjoy what we do there, but we just have no time to enjoy ourselves during the weekends. like the sergeants say, we just have to suck thumb and lan lan..
some of the dudes simply cant listen to instructions, misfired and all those stupid stuffs, resulting in confinement. cant help but wonder, but our sergeants try all their might to get us confined and sign for guard duty. thats how we learn how to get disiplined i guess. spare the rod and spoil the child?
anyway, our platoon sergeant is clearing his leave, preparing for his ord, and our section commander would be taking over his position. this seems to be a happy news, but our platoon sergeant is coming back for the field camp, and would be taking over as section commander for our section because our section commander is going for platoon sergeant course. =/
the sergeants start to get to know us better and likewise for us, and we start to talk like friends, though most of the times ended up doing push-ups on the ground, but so far, we have been getting our due welfare. (though we only get one canteen break and one e-mart break this week, i think we'll get more in the many more weeks to come =])
and talking about section rivalries, more people start to get unhappy with one another, more people start to voice out their displeasure with one another. platoon animosity begins too, during the regular water parades, riducule and mimic the rest of the other platoon just like some inter-class competition going on every single day. of course we get to compose our own songs and present it during our road marches, or the short marching to the cookhouse, or whatever place we need to get to.
i need to get more rest before embarking on a safe journey as a chao recruit. live firing next week, something to look forward to!
the movie stars mostly on newcastle players, thou im not a toon fan, to see big stars appearing in a movie, that is something fresh and im sure soccer fans love watching. special appearances by real madrid stars, including beckham, raul and zidane.
this movie talks about a boy, santiago, who dreams of playing professional football. moving from mexico to los angeles with his father, grandma and brother, he worked odd jobs to earn himself closer to his dream. he stumbles upon a chance when an ex-scout, glen, saw his talents. glen managed to give santiago a chance of playing for a big club like newcastle united, where football is a religion. every single geodie breathes the air of the toon. the movie screens the major attractions of newcastle and london, which brings memories of my happy days back in the UK. the adrenelin rush, passion in football certainly attracts football fans like me closer to the show. at some point in time, you really feel like crying because the director shares alot of emotional sides of football, family and a whole lot of values put together gelled as one.
definitely worth the cash la. go watch it if you love football, lots of booze, lots of women dancing. a mix of action, comedy, romance all jumbled up into one. real madrid's coming up with one of their own. and i heard goal 2 and 3 would be coming up in the next couple of years. cant wait for it man..
time really flies. its already been a month since i have been enlisted. 4 weeks of training has left me physically strained and mentally stronger. im getting used to the life there, and simply put, i feel that im not going to really enjoy my time there.
they say time lets you know who are your best friends, and who are the ones who just wants to stab you in the back and leave you bleeding to death. we love to say, "dont leave any man behind." who really does that anyway? i see selfish fuckers covering their own asses everywhere. i dont mean every single one is selfish. just a handful of black sheep hiding in the pack. not doing what they are supposed to, leaving their assignments hanging and wasting life away.. the big problem is, we get fucked together, and these people just sits around, looking like innocent parties.
maybe someone planned to make a bunch of 50 strangers come together and go through 13 weeks of hardship, during the course, make new friends, make peace and leave the place with 49 new brothers. i only have 9 weeks left. and i have only made 11 new ones. it seems like there are section rivalries already.
bmt starts next week. more playing with our m-16, less physical training, higher risk of getting a confinement, and our army life is starting next week. undoubtedly, im still proud of my platoon, because we can work together amidst all the rivalry shit; i guess that makes us push ourselves even harder. we will do our best to bond the weakest links up, and make the whole platoon stick as one.
im thinking incoherently as usual. result of insufficient rest and strenous exercises.. boo
music changes the mood. whatever i said before i'll say it again. because i think im so fucking correct last time, this time and every other time. no lah, not cocky, basically just spent a few days of my precious civilian life listening to old music, some make me think back of the happy sweet days, some simply brought back bitter sad ones. because music puts my moral back to where it was previously.
every song brings me back to different era of our lives, from old secondary school days where boy bands (bsb, n*sync, a1) to the post secondary school days, hip-hop and rock (jay-z, linkin park) starts to get its recognition. soon after, taste buds changes as time goes by. new genres like r&b and chill-outs begin to get higher popularity amongst the music lovers. and thats how we grow along with the different types of music. every song brings back some memory of someone, how you sang that song with some people in school, how that one song makes you think of one very special girl, how another hit makes you tear because it reminds you of the sad old past. *ouch. thats the magical thing about music.
spent the saturday night out with poly mates like the days we used to. a dinner at billy bombers, a movie (corpse bride), and after-movie chit-chat cum talk-cock session at none other than the coffee conneiseur sums up the day.
dinner was rather rushed because we had to be in time for the movie. only had like 30 mins or so to place our order, finish up our sumptuous meal and walk over to cine. the waitress in there were quite pretty all of a sudden. LOL. i sound so desperate all of a sudden. =P they were really cute lah, they usually hire these young girls to attract desperate ah-ping-ge who are loaded yet dunno where to spend their cash on, den these boys-turned-men will feel that the service charge was fairly given. anyhoos, the girls continue to be an attractive factor why guys should visit heeren every single week without fail.
the movie was a waste of money. dun ask me why. it only lasted 75 mins max. and the story line was expected. a human being married to a corpse bride. den going back to his real human wife in the end. jabs of humour were injected during the course of the movie, and i guess thats the only good thing. walking along the streets of orchard road while finding a suitable drinking (coffee) spot was quite a hectic task on a busy saturday night where coffee houses and restaurants were always filled with couples, families, or friends hanging out. we managed to find a comfy couch at tcc just opp somerset mrt. we were all tired after the long day. managed to get on one of the later trains home.
the week was short, but final week of our ptp phase will end soon, and the real military training has yet to begin. hopefully we all get fit and strong bodies like we wish for. one week at a time they say. i shall see you all in 7 days' time..
